BUSY WEEKEND WITH BARN FIRE & ENVIRONMENTAL RESCUE

October 13, 2024

On Saturday, October 11 around 8:15pm, the WVFC and mutual aid were dispatched to assist the Robesonia Fire Co. for a farm tractor on fire near a barn at 1785 N. Church St. in Heidelberg Twp.

First arriving apparatus found the fire had extended from the tractor to the barn. The barn was filled with a large amount of hay which accelerated the fire to rapidly progress throughout the barn becoming fully involved. A second alarm was requested as well as additional tankers responding from Berks, Lebanon and Lancaster counties. Fill sites were established using fire hydrants at the Conrad Weiser High School and at Church St. and Steeple Dr.

Ladder 47 was set up for master stream operations for the duration of the incident while Engine 47 assisted with water supply. Tanker 47 assisted in the tanker shuttle. Crews were able to contain the fire to the main barn and no extension to any of the silos or any other structures. There were no injuries reported and all of the cows in the second barn were evacuated safely. Heavy machinery was brought in to assist with removing the hay so it could be extinguished. The WVFC returned to station by 630am. At 1100am, the WVFC was requested back to the scene due to a re-kindle and were on scene for another two hours.

Later around 4:30pm, the WVFC and Rescue 18 from Western Berks FD were dispatched to the 500 BLK of Texter Mountain Rd. in Heidelberg Twp. to again assist the Robesonia FC with extrication of an injured hunter that fell out of a tree stand. Crews arrived on scene and gained access to the patient, packaged him in a stokes basket and assisted with extrication.
